Event Description
The Boston Marathon is the worlds oldest Marathon, the 2019 edition will be its 123rd. To participate in the event one must qualify by completing a prior marathon faster than the threshold time set for one's age-group. For example, the qualifying time for a male runner in the age-group 40 to 44 is 3h20m or a pace of 4:46 min/km (7:40 min/mile). This makes the event iconic among marathon runners, putting participants in a class of their own.The event is challenging. Weather in mid April in the Northeast can be unpredictable, the temperature can be near the freezing mark or be in 20's (70's in degrees F). With these variations one can expect rain, snow or hot sun. The course is a point to point circuit that starts in Hopkinton and finishes in Boston. The terrain consists of undulating hills. Heartbreak hill is the steepest and most notable. It comes near mile 20 and signals the final ascent before the finish. This hill is considered by many participants to be the most challenging portion of the course.
